Chinese Spring Festival, also called Lunar New Year, has more than 4,000 years of history. Being one of the traditional Chinese festivals, it is the grandest and the most important festival for Chinese people. It is also the time for the whole families to get together, which is similar with Christmas Day to the westerners. Originating during the Shang Dynasty (about 17th - 11th century BC), Spring Festival, which celebrates family reunion, is full of rich and colorful activities, and hopes with theadventof spring and flowers blossoming. People from different regions and different ethnic groups celebrate it in their unique ways.
It comes on the first day of Chinese lunar calendar and lasts for almost half of a month. But in folk custom, this traditional holiday lasts from the 23rd day of the twelfth month to the 15th day of the first month (Lantern Festival) in the lunar calendar. Among these days, the New Year’s Eve and the first day of the New Year is the peak time. The exact days are different in every year according to the lunar calendar.
It is said that the custom of Spring Festival started in when people offered sacrifice to ancestors in the last month of Chinese lunar calendar. At that time, people prepared the sacrifice by doing thorough cleaning, having bathes and so on. Later, people began to worship differentdeitiesas well on that day. It is the time that almost all the farm works were done and people have free time. The sacrificing time changed according to the farming schedule and was not fixed until the Han Dynasty (202BC-220AD). The customs of worshipping deities and ancestors remains even though the ceremonies are not as grand as before. It is also the time that spring is coming, so people held all kinds of ceremonies to welcome it.
Preparing the New Year starts 7 days before the New Year’s Eve. According to Chinese lunar calendar, people start to clean the house on Dec. 24, butcher on Dec. 26th and so on. People have certain things to do on each day. These activities will end Jan. 15th of the lunar calendar.
Every family does a thorough house cleaning and purchases enough food, including fish, meat, roasted nuts and seeds, all kinds of candies and fruits, etc, for the festival period. Also, new clothes must be bought, especially for children. Red scrolls with complementary poetic couplets, one line on each side of the gate, are pasted at every gate. The Chinese character 'Fu' is pasted on the center of the door and paper-cut pictures adorn windows.
The Spring Festival is a start for a new year, so it is regarded as theomenof a year. People have many taboos during this period. Many bad words related to “death”, “broken”, “killing”, “ghost” and “illness” or “sickness” are forbidden during conversations. In some places, there are more specific details. They consider it unlucky if thebarrelof rice is empty, because they think they will have nothing to eat in the next year. Taking medicine is forbidden on this day, otherwise, people will have sick for the whole year and take medicine constantly.
Food during this happy event has its characteristics, which is the representative of Chinese festival food culture. Dumplings and the reunion dinner are indispensable at this time. Cold and hot dishes are all served. Fish is always an important dish then, which expresses people’s hope of having a wealthy year.
In China, different places have their own traditions and activities to celebrate the Spring Festival. Beijing, Guangzhou, Xian and Pingyao are some good places to go if one intends to come during the time period. If one does not want to travel so long, but still want to enjoy the atmosphere of Chinese New Year, the local Chinatown is the best place.

Good afternoon everyone.I’m Wu Yunfei y ,I’ll talk about the topic about spring festival .
The Spring festival ,Chinese New Year,is the most important festival for all us. But we find the western festival become more popular than New Year in the recently years. some people wonder whether the Christmas will replace the Spring Festival in the can find easily Christmas cards become popular with while the Spring Festival is less appealing to this worry is fairly unnecessary we should treasure the Spring Festival forever?
In my opinion ,the Spring Festival as the most influential traditional festival have important meaning for us ral days before the new year, people begin to prepare. Farmers kill pigs, sheep, cocks and hens. City dwellers buy meat fish and vegetables. Houses are cleaned; coupletsare (春联)posted on the doors. Colorful lanterns are hung at the family members will get together on New Year Eve to have a big meal . During which people do not work except for the workers on duty. Students do not go to school, and shops are closed. At the same time ,everyone celebrates to each other . When people meet on the way, they say to each other "Happy New Year" about 12 o'clock, some parents and children light whole sky is lighted brightly. We may watch the fireworks excitedly. How busy it is! On the first early
morning of one year,Friends and relatives pay new year calls and gives presents to each other. At that time, children are the happiest because they can get many red packets form their parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts and so on.
(综上所述) :I think,it is natural that with increasing exchanges with the West,a lot of Western holidays have been gradually introduced into China. For us Chinese we should never neglect or even discard our own traditional festivals. For centuries Chinese have observed this traditional holiday to welcome the beginning of a new year. And we will treasure the Spring Festival forever.
春节英语演讲稿 篇4
I'm very glad to stand here again. As we can know, today is the last class of our English speech course, and the winter holiday is coming, we are going to have a 45-days-holiday at least.
However, the new year holiday is too short for the working people, according to the regulations of the state, there are only 7 days federal holidays for the working people. Several years later, all of us should participate in work, so this problem is closely related to each of us.
Firstly, do the words "spring festival" reminds you of something which happen every year, and it is too crowded and makes people exhausted? I think some of you can get the answer.
It is the Spring Transportation. Going home for Spring Festival is a traditional custom of Chinese people, but millions of people's travels bring a great pressure on traffic, especially in such a short time.
"7 days holiday, 4 days on the way. " But the resources of the tickets are very limited, so the people who can buy the tickets are well off, others who are not lucky enough to get the ticket quickly should spend the New Year in a strange land.
Secondly, in fact, short vacation of the spring festival has brought a lot of serious problems. When the official announced the plan of the new year holiday, Xinlang, a famous media did a survey on the satisfaction degree of it, more than 70 % of the people are dissatisfied with the plan. Most
of them wanted more time for relaxed, or they would have less passion for their work in the next year. A netizen called Teemo said he always felt angry when every year he said goodbye to his family and came back to work.
Nowadays, fewer people choose to leave home for work. Lots of companies in the eastern coastal area are facing bankruptcy, because no workers engaged in production activities. So do my parents' company. This situation is not good for the eastern region's economic development.
So, we can expect, if the new year holiday can be longer for the working people, maybe it will make the reunion of families more convenient and let people celebrate the Spring festival with a good mood. Also, the problems we mentioned above could be solved. Thank you!
春节英语演讲稿 篇5
January first. The beginning of a new year. As far back in history as we can tell, people have celebrated the start of a new year.
The people of ancient Egypt began their new year in summer. That is when the Nile River flooded its banks, bringing water and fertility to the land. The people of ancient Babylonia and Persia began their new year on March twenty-first, the first day of spring. And, some Native American Indians began their new year when the nuts of the oak tree became ripe. That was usually in late summer.
Now, almost everyone celebrates New Year's Day on January first. Today, as before, people observe the New Year's holiday in many different ways.
The ancient Babylonians celebrated by forcing their king to give up his crown and royal clothing. They made him get down on his knees and admit all the mistakes he had made during the past year.
This idea of admitting wrongs and finishing the business of the old year is found in many societies at new year's. So is the idea of making resolutions. A resolution is a promise to change your ways. To stop smoking, for example. Or to get more physical exercise.
Noise-making is another ancient custom at the new year. The noise is considered necessary to chase away the evil spirits of the old year. People around the world do different things to make a lot of noise. They may hit sticks together. Or beat on drums. Or blow horns. Or explode fireworks.
Americans celebrate the New Year in many ways.
Most do not have to go to work or school. So they visit family and friends. Attend church services. Share a holiday meal. Or watch new year's parades on television. Two of the most famous parades are the Mummer's Parade in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and the Rose Parade in Pasadena, California. Both have existed for many years.
Americans also watch football on television on New Year's Day. Most years, university teams play in special holiday games.
For those who have been busy at work or school, New Year's may be a day of rest. They spend the time thinking about, and preparing for, the demands of the new year.
